Event Summary
Karen Gee (EDD), a business chapter board
member, organized the business chapter's first dictionary project event
on October 19, 2007 at Edward Kemble Elementary School in South
Sacramento. The dictionary project's purpose is to encourage elementary
school students to continue their pursuit of knowledge and eventually
attend college after high school through interacting with and receiving
dictionaries from Sacramento State alumni. In preparation for the event,
Karen, and fellow board member, Deanna Schluter (HP) purchased the 145
dictionaries that were distributed to the students. Alumni board members
Karen Gee, Paul Finn (USPS), Ron Hoffman (Pan American Underwriters) and
Kevin Nakano (Nakano Realty) volunteered to present the dictionaries to
3rd grade students in seven different classes. They presented the
dictionaries to the students and helped them practice how to use the
dictionaries by having contests to look up “character words” (i.e.
respect, responsibility, trustworthy, etc.). The students enjoyed
interacting with the alumni, receiving new dictionaries and competing
for prizes. We also noted that every teacher and administrator that we
talked with at the elementary school was a Sacramento State alumni. The
business chapter plans to sponsor this event at least annually. If you'd
